The Geelong Club (GRCCC) put on a fantastic F1 event with three - yes, count them 3! - different F1 classes at their indoor asphalt track:
- F1 21.5 was the normal F1 class you'd expect to see (21.5 brushless motor).
- F1 540 was any F1 car with a silver can motor (typically any 540 size 27 turn Johnson or Mabuchi silver can motor).
- F1 Classic for the GP3D cars with the amazing 1960s body shells (independent suspension and a smaller motor than a 540 size).
Yes, that's French - how fancy are we! :)
The Concours table was a sight to behold and the three winners were: 1st Oscar Piastri 2023 McLaren by Dave Stevens using Raceway RC decals, 2nd Chris Amon GP3D Ferrari by Heath Murray, 3rd Toyota Pro 10 by Grant Davies
This was a one day event (excellent choice!) with a seeding round followed by four race rounds. Each round earned points based on your finishing place. For extra fun, full-scale F1 points were used (1st = 25, 2nd = 18, 3rd = 15, etc). Your starting grid position was your finishing position in the last round.
Tyres were open rubber or foam. Geelong is a very low grip asphalt indoor track and all but one of the F1 21.5 drivers ran foam tyres to provide sufficient grip. The last time I ran foam tyres at an event was in 2012 using Tamiya B foams. The Contact foams most drivers used provided immense grip (I traction rolled several times) and provided lap times within 2 seconds of the 1/12 13.5 cars! It was excellent fun to drive but removed a lot of the limits that I personally find so enjoyable in F1 (1. careful application of throttle - I could just yank full throttle whenever I felt like it, 2. finding the limits of grip - there were no limits except you could traction roll when pushing too hard).
After talking to the locals I applied Mighty Gripper V3 (Orange) to the rear tyres only for 15 min+ at 45C. Others sauced their front tyres as well but I had more than enough steering without it. I used Contact JF1-42FA fronts and JF1-28RA rears.

Again. Again. Again!
Thanks again to the Geelong Club and especially to Grant Davies for coordinating the event.
Geelong has regular F1 races and most clubs will put on an F1 class if 3 or more drivers enter. See our Where to race page.
